LYCHEE LAND

Lychee harvest season in Bac Giang, Vietnam

Every year from May through July, Vietnam's northern provinces turn into a sea of red ripe lychees. In Bac Giang province, northeast of the capital city Hanoi, there are over 28,000 hectares of lychee orchards, according to Vietnam's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. Each morning during lychee season, Highway 31, which runs through Bac Giang and ends in the mountainous region near the Vietnam-China border, fills with farmers carrying bundles of just-harvested lychees down from their orchards to sell to redistributors, who use long-haul trucks, planes and public buses to send the fruit throughout Vietnam and for international export.
